Think about Michael Jackson or Bill Gates. What is the secret of their perfect careers?
Listen to your heart rather than your head
The secret of a perfect career is: listen to your heart and not to your head. Your head can often fool you. Your heart shows you a more accurate picture, and guides you down the path of achieving your wishes. When you listen to your heart, then you are able to make decisions that you will be happy with.
Assess yourself
Assess your talent and your ability. Then assess the skills that you have gotten during your education and professional training. Think about what skills you will bring to your new career, and what interests you have. The important thing for you is to find out how you are going to use these resources in your career. Once you have done some soul-searching (反省), you have already come upon the second most important secret to the perfect career search. If you are not sure how you are going to assess yourself, you can get professional help from a career adviser or other experts.
Have a vision (愿景)
Many people mistakenly believe that they have to have some magic powers to have a vision. Completely wrong! If you have mastered the above two secrets, you are ready to apply the third secret to finding the perfect career. Having a vision gives you a sense of purpose, something to dream about. Whenever you move away from your chosen path, your vision will put you back on course. Even if your weaknesses are greater than your strengths, your vision will give you the power to change those weaknesses into strengths.
Now that you are in the possession of these secrets, you can go ahead and never look back.
56. If you listen to your head, you may ________.
A. find good ways to solve problems   B. meet much difficulty
C. make wrong decisions       D. see a clear picture of things
57. What’s the key point for you to do while assessing yourselves?
A. Use your resources in your career properly.
B. Know your talent or ability exactly.
C. Get help from a career adviser.
D. Learn what you are interested in.
58. Which of the following statements is NOT true about a vision?
A. A vision can help you find your perfect career.
B. A vision can change a weakness into a strength.
C. People can have a vision only when they have magic powers.
D. Mastering the first two secrets helps you have a vision.
59. What is the advantage of having a vision?
  A. It can ensure your success in the future.
B. It can keep you on your chosen path.
C. It can help you know what your weakness is.
D. It can help you live a rich and interesting life.

New students at Abilene Christian University receive more than the usual campus (校园) map and lists of required books when they enter the university. For several years, they’ve also received an iPhone or iPod Touch from the university before they begin classes.
At Abilene Christian University, students and teachers get the Apple equipment for free but are responsible for the monthly charges. About 2,800 students and 70% of the 250 professors use the Apple technology for teaching purposes. An art teacher has students use an application that allows them to do a draft and to send it to the teacher and other students for advice before starting their real art pieces. A drama teacher records a video of the lead dancer in a production and sends it to other students for rehearsal (排练).
“We’re seeing some experiments with this equipment,” says William Rankin, director of the educational department of English at Abilene Christian. “We see it as a new platform for learning.”
Mike Kenney, a chemistry professor at Case Western Reserve University, says he has about 350 pounds’ worth of books in his Kindle, a wireless reading tool. The 40 students in his chemistry class chosen for the program exchanged an eight-pound chemistry book for the two-pound e-reader.
Several other universities across the nation — Pace in New York, Princeton in New Jersey, Reed in Oregon, and Arizona State — are also taking part in the program.
There are economic benefits, too. A book on Kindle costs about half as much as the paper textbook. At the University of Texas-San Antonio, professors are using a $375,000 grant (拨款) to come up with a curriculum that will transform three-day-a-week classes into ones in which students independently connect to lessons online and then have one day for discussion and debate in the classroom.
60. When entering Abilene Christian University, new students will receive _________.
① lists of required books ② an iPhone or iPod Touch ③ the campus map ④ a computer
A. ①②③   B. ②③④    C. ①③④   D. ①②④
61. From William Rankin’s words we learn that _________.
A. they use the equipment mainly for amusement
B. they are trying new learning methods with the equipment
C. they have used the equipment for several years
D. they don’t attach much importance to the equipment
62. Why were Kindles chosen to replace paper textbooks in some universities?
A. Because they can store lots of books and make study easier.
B. Because they look cool and fashionable for students to use.
C. Because they are provided by schools and are totally free to use.
D. Because students need do a draft and send it to their teachers.
63. How many universities taking part in the Kindle’s program are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two.     B. Three.    C. Five.      D. Seven.
C难度:难
When considering the nature of things, a variety of historical figures are cited as influential. While many of them have merit that deserves praise or admiration, Confucius stands alone. Inspiration coming from Confucius is so great in many people’s lives.
Confucius is considered one of the greatest thinkers of all time. He was a Chinese philosopher believed to have lived in the fifth century BC. His teachings are primarily found in The Analects of Confucius (《论语》) which was edited by his disciples (门徒), and include teachings on personal morality, war, governing, justice and sincerity. Here are a few of his inspirational and thoughtful words.
When anger rises, think of the consequences.
He who speaks without modesty will find it difficult to make his words good.
The superior man, when living in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is in order, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his states are preserved.
When we see men of a contrary character, we should turn inwards and examine ourselves.
Fine words and an insinuating appearance (巧言令色) are seldom associated with true virtue.
To be able to practice five things under all circumstances constitutes perfect virtue; these five things are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness and kindness.
By nature, men are nearly alike; by practice, they get to be wide apart.
He who exercises government by means of his virtue may be compared to the north polar star, which keeps its place and all the stars turn towards it.
After reading the above thoughts, I find it easy to understand why the writing and sayings of Confucius have stood the test of time. Indeed, it is hard to imagine any more inspiring thoughts being produced by any figure of any time.
64. What’s the best title for this passage?
  A. Confucius’ effect on the world.    B. Inspiration coming from Confucius.
  C. Thoughts of Confucius.      D. Confucius — a great philosopher.

  B. Confucius edited The Analects of Confucius himself.
  C. The writing and sayings of Confucius have stood the test of time.
  D. Confucius was always prepared for safety even in danger.
67. Which of the following aspects is NOT covered in Confucius’ sayings in the passage?
  A. Trade.      B. Governing.   C. Personal morality.  D. True virtue.
D难度:中
My father made a deal with me that he would match whatever I could come up with to buy my first car. From that time I was a saver. My allowance, back in those days, was twenty five cents a week.
I grew up on a farm near a small town called Ventura. In those days the area was mostly agricultural. The climate was and still is as close to perfect as you could get. I earned some of my money by picking one crop or another. When I was about ten, a school friend’s family owned walnut orchards (胡桃园) and it was harvest time. She told me we could earn five dollars for every bag of walnuts we picked. I certainly learned about picking walnuts that day. That was a hard job to me as a young girl and not surprisingly, that was my first and last time as a walnut picker.
In 1960 my grandmother passed away. She left me 100 shares of AT&T. 100 shares of stock (股票) don’t seem like much today but back then those shares paid me $240 per year in dividends (红利). That was huge for a kid of my age.
By the time I was seventeen I had saved up $1,300 dollars and I knew exactly what I wanted. I think my father was somewhat surprised when I announced I had saved up $1,300 and was ready to buy my new car. I’ll never forget the evening my father said, “Let’s go and see that car.” I was so excited.
My father could have easily just given me the car but he always insisted that his children work for what they got. This was not a bad thing. Now that I think about it I need to thank my father. I learned self-reliance (自立). Self-reliance is equal to freedom.
68. The author wrote this passage to ________.
  A. teach young kids how to save money
  B. tell us a story about how she bought her first car
  C. advise parents how to educate their kids
  D. encourage us to work hard and be self-reliable
69. Which of the following did NOT contribute to the author’s saving of $1,300?
A. Her weekly allowance. B. Her earnings from picking walnuts.
C. Shares left by her grandma. D. Her earnings from selling shares.
70. From the underlined part in Paragraph 2, we learn that ________.
A. the author had no more chances to pick walnuts
B. the author had earned enough money for her car
C. picking walnuts was too hard for kids like the author
D. the author had no time to do that kind of job again
71. What was the author’s father’s probable purpose of making her work for her first car?
A. To give her a big surprise.
B. To give her complete freedom.
C. To let her learn self-reliance.
D. To save money for the family.
72. The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to the fact that ________.
  A. the author’s father made her work for her first car
  B. the author didn’t ask her father to give her a car directly
  C. the author’s father learned that she bought a new car
  D. the author saved up $1,300 dollars in a short time
