Kathy is an American girl. Here is her story.
“My mother started abusing drugs(滥用药物) when I was in Grade Four, so I wasn’t surprised at all when I was offered drugs for the first time by my friend in Grade Seven. Later, my mother left me. That broke my heart. I thought that my mother preferred choosing drugs to staying with me. I hated drugs, but that didn’t make me stop taking them, because I had to depend on them to drive away my pain and anger.
After my mother left, I moved to my father’s house and lived with him. He used to drink a lot and we kept arguing every day. I tried to stay away from my house and stayed out with my friends. I drank and took drugs, which made me feel ‘high’. Before, I’d just taken drugs for fun, but at that time I had to depend on them to help me spend every day.
When I turned 18, I left for California to try to start a new life, but I was lonely there. The only thing I could do was to get high by abusing drugs. One day, I suddenly realized what I was doing was killing myself. I really missed my family, so I called my father and told him I wanted to go back home.
I’m happy that I’ve been away from drugs for nearly a year now. My father hasn’t drunk for several months. It’s a lot easier for us to get along with each other now. I don’t have many chances to see my mother and I don’t know if we’ll be close again. All I know is that I don’t want to waste my life taking drugs any longer. I hope to be the girl that I’ve been dreaming of being!”

Microblog is a tool for communicating with your friends. You can make your friends know what’s happening to you in any place at any time. For example, after you type “I watched the film Confucius today…”, your friends may see the information and then have a short discussion about it. They can also post similar information to share with you.
Microblog can also offer you chances to get closer to movie or sports stars. Stars can write what they see, hear or think on their own Microblog. In this way, fans can learn more about their favorite stars’ daily activities easily.

George McJunkin was a cowboy. He was born in West Texas before the Civil War. As a boy, McJunkin never had a chance to go to school, but he still learned how to read and write. While sitting around the campfire at night, other cowboys helped him. Once McJunkin learned to read, he read as many books as he could.
In the summer of 1908, McJunkin was riding his horse near Folsom, New Mexico. He noticed some large bones in the dirt. He stopped to examine the bones more carefully. They didn’t appear to be cow bones. They didn’t resemble buffalo(水牛)bones either. McJunkin was sure they were bones of an animal that had lived long ago.
Alongside the bones McJunkin found some old flint weapons. Flint is a very hard stone. People in ancient times used it to make knives and spear tips(矛尖). McJunkin thought that the flint tools had been used to kill the animal. If the animal had lived there thousands of years before, the people who had killed it must have lived there, too. McJunkin was right, but at first nobody believed him.
McJunkin had made an important find. However, he died before the importance of his discovery was fully understood. McJunkin had found evidence(证据) of an ancient person nobody knew about. These people, who were later called Folsom Man, lived in New Mexico 10,000 years ago. McJunkin’s discovery goes on to be studied by scientists today.

My opinions on volunteering
We are middle school students and we are busy with our lessons. So some people think we should pay attention to our studies. If we volunteer to help others, it’s a waste of time. But I think volunteering is great. I not only feel good about helping others but also like to spend time doing what I love to do. And from volunteering I can learn many things that I have never learned in class. So if I have an opportunity, I’d like to visit the old people’s home to clean up for them. I’d also like to help sick kids in the hospital.
In a word, I’d like to help people in need. I’d love to be a volunteer in the future.
